G.3503.7 'Mother of Pearl' (Circa 1980-90s)

WHY WE CURATED IT:
There are watches you notice because they are loud, and then there are watches that make you look twice. This Gérald Genta G.3503.7 belongs firmly in the latter category.

If you have spent any time around watches, you have almost certainly encountered Gérald Genta’s work. His designs shaped some of the most recognisable watches of the modern era, from the Universal Genève Polerouter to the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, Patek Philippe Nautilus and IWC Ingenieur SL. His watches under his own name, however, remain a much less travelled part of the collecting world. That makes pieces like the G.3503.7 particularly interesting. Here, Genta was no longer designing within the visual language of another brand. He had the freedom to explore his own ideas, and the result is considerably more extravagant.

The case is a good place to start. An octagonal ribbed case sits beneath a circular bezel, creating a layered silhouette that feels architectural without becoming severe. There are familiar Genta signatures in the geometry, but the execution is considerably more ornate. Protruding side screws, a studded crown, and a ring of 24-hour markers add detail to the structure, while the 35mm proportions keep everything surprisingly restrained on the wrist. In platinum, the watch has the added presence that comes from precious metal without needing to rely on size.

What makes the G.3503.7 especially interesting, though, is how many ideas it brings together. A hefty full platinum case, elaborate geometry, mother of pearl, a chronograph and a GMT display would already make for an unusual combination. Taken together, they capture something distinctive about the period: a willingness to experiment with materials, displays and technology rather than simply refine established formulas. The G.3503.7 feels like a watch from that moment when convention was still being treated as something to test rather than follow.

The GQ2 mecha-quartz movement is part of that story. It combines quartz timekeeping with a mechanically operated chronograph, a particularly period-appropriate solution for a watch born from this kind of experimentation. The movement itself is also well finished, giving it a sense of substance beyond its practical advantages. You get the accuracy and convenience of quartz, but retain the tactile operation of a mechanical chronograph, including the wonderfully smooth sweep of the central chronograph hand. It is an unusual choice, but one that feels completely at home here.

Then there is the dial. The use of mother of pearl is decidedly unconventional, particularly on a watch combining GMT and chronograph functions, and that is precisely what makes it so compelling. The radiant MOP centre is almost hypnotic, constantly changing as it catches the light, while the rounded luminous hour numerals provide a softer counterpoint to the angular case. The unusual GMT hand adds another layer to the display, while the chronograph hand brings movement to what could otherwise be an elaborate composition. There is a lot happening here, but the MOP gives the dial enough depth and variation to hold it together. It is an oddball combination, but a remarkably considered one.

That is ultimately what drew us to this particular example. Rarity alone is never enough. What matters is when rarity comes with something genuinely distinctive to collect. In this case, the combination is unusually compelling: a full platinum case that is far less frequently encountered than the white gold examples that occasionally surface, original hallmarks, an unusual GMT and chronograph display, a beautiful MOP dial and proportions that remain genuinely wearable.

It is the sort of rarity that rewards looking beyond the obvious. The G.3503.7 is already an unconventional Genta, but finding one in platinum adds another layer to the story. Rather than simply being an uncommon reference, this is a particularly unusual execution of it, bringing together precious metal, experimental displays and Genta's unmistakable taste for elaborate geometry.

For many collectors, the journey into Genta's work begins with the watches he designed for other brands. You discover the Royal Oak, encounter the Nautilus, notice the Ingenieur or Polerouter, and eventually become curious about the designer behind them. His own watches offer a different perspective. They are not simply variations on those famous designs, but a glimpse of what Genta explored when the constraints of another brand’s identity were removed.

The G.3503.7 is an especially enjoyable example. It has the architectural quality we associate with Genta, but expresses it through a more extravagant mix of shapes, materials and functions. It is precious without being overly formal, complicated without taking itself too seriously, and unusual without becoming difficult to wear. Most importantly, it feels like a product of an era when watchmakers and designers were still willing to experiment with what a wristwatch could be.

CONDITION:
9/10. The case is in excellent overall condition, showing only very minor hairlines consistent with light use. The overall condition suggests that the watch has been worn sparingly. The hallmarks on the back and inner section of the caseback all remain sharp and legible.

The mother-of-pearl dial remains exceptionally clean and well preserved, with the Gérald Genta Cal.
