WHY WE CURATED IT:
Few watches are as closely associated with Cartier as the Tank. Its rectangular case, Roman numerals, blued hands and cabochon crown have become some of the most recognisable elements in watch design. But part of the fun of the Must de Cartier is seeing what happens when Cartier takes that familiar formula and changes the mood. The Ref. 590005 we have here is a particularly good example.

At first glance, it is unmistakably a Tank. The clean rectangular case and brancards frame the dial exactly as they should, while the familiar Cartier details are all present and accounted for. Look a little closer, however, and the black dial gives the watch an entirely different personality.

Against the warm tone of the gold-plated case, the deep black dial feels wonderfully dramatic. Black paired with yellow gold is one of those combinations that never seems to go out of style. There is something inherently refined about the contrast, with the dark dial giving the warmth of the gold a little more depth while adding just the right touch of visual opulence without ever veering into excess. It is a simple combination, but one that always seems to remain in vogue.

Look closely under strong light and another detail begins to emerge. Fine hairlines have formed across the lacquer, creating what collectors often refer to as ‘spidering’. It is incredibly subtle in this example and almost impossible to spot in ordinary photographs, only revealing itself under intense lighting. This kind of crazing can occur naturally as lacquer ages and responds to decades of changes in temperature and humidity. Some collectors appreciate it as part of the dial’s ageing process, particularly when it remains fine and stable like this example, where it adds a little character without distracting from the deep black surface.

This is one of the things I enjoy about the Must line. The Tank itself is an incredibly consistent design, but Cartier was never afraid to experiment with the details around it. Change the dial, colour or material, and suddenly the same basic watch can feel completely different. The caseback tells another part of the story. Rather than being solid gold, the 590005 uses Cartier’s traditional vermeil construction, with 20-micron gold plating over a 925 sterling silver case. It gives the watch the warmth and presence of gold while retaining the more accessible character that helped define the Must collection.

There is something quite appealing about that balance. The Tank is one of Cartier’s most recognisable designs, yet the Must version does not feel precious or overly formal. It is a little more relaxed, a little more playful, and this black dial pushes that character even further. And despite all the variations Cartier produced over the years, the underlying design still does most of the work. The proportions are clean, the dial is beautifully restrained, and those little Cartier signatures are enough to make the watch instantly recognisable.

Sometimes, changing the mood is all it takes to make a familiar design feel fresh again. The Ref. 590005 does exactly that. Take away the expected silver or cream dial, give it a warm gold case and a deep black face, and the Tank suddenly feels a little more mischievous.

CONDITION:
7.5/10. Good overall condition with honest signs of wear and light oxidation visible throughout the vermeil case, consistent with age and light use. The dial remains very clean and well preserved, with some subtle signs of spidering. The effect appears stable and is barely visible from a distance, only becoming apparent under direct light. There are also some signs of oxidation on the hands.

As shown in the photographs, the mineral glass has some light scratches consistent with previous use, with one particular obvious one located on the bottom right side of the handset. The caseback retains sharp and legible engravings. The watch is fitted with a correct Cartier-style vermeil tang buckle.

The manual-winding Cartier Cal. 78-1 movement is running consistently, with healthy and stable amplitude and low beat error. Testing across multiple positions shows a positional variation of approximately +11 seconds per day, with the movement running slightly fast overall. Overall, the movement is demonstrating stable performance consistent with a watch of this vintage, with the current rate considered acceptable for its age.

It is offered alongside a period-correct Cartier presentation box.
