WHY WE CURATED IT:
Few watches are as closely associated with Cartier as the Tank. Its rectangular case, Roman numerals, blued hands and cabochon crown have become some of the most recognisable elements in watch design. But when Cartier introduced the Must de Cartier Tank in the late 1970s, it found a way to make that familiar design feel a little more relaxed, colourful and accessible.

The Ref. 366001 we have here is one of the references most closely associated with that era. At around 21mm x 28mm, the SM proportions are petite by modern standards, but they work beautifully with the Tank's naturally elongated shape. The narrow case sits neatly on the wrist, while the long brancards give it enough presence without making it feel overly delicate.

What makes the Must Tank particularly enjoyable is the freedom Cartier gave itself with the formula. The Tank remained instantly recognisable, but the Must collection allowed the Maison to experiment with lacquer, colour and materials in ways that would have felt rather different on its more formal watches.

The black dial and warm vermeil case create a combination that feels both elegant and slightly dramatic. It is the kind of pairing that never really goes out of style, adding a touch of visual opulence without ever veering into excess. The black gives the Roman numerals and minute track a touch of crispness, while the gold keeps the composition warm, giving the watch a certain richness that feels well-considered rather than excessive.

Here, the deep black lacquer dial is also beautifully intact. There is very little competing for attention. The Roman numerals, blue hands and Cartier signature are allowed to sit against that deep black surface, and the whole thing feels remarkably clean despite its age.

The vermeil construction is another part of the Must story. Rather than using solid gold, Cartier paired a 925 sterling silver case with a layer of gold, giving the watch the warmth and presence of precious metal while making the design considerably more approachable. It was a clever way of bringing Cartier's designs to a much wider audience without losing the visual language that made them special in the first place.

And that is probably what I enjoy most about the Must Tank. Cartier did not need to reinvent the Tank. It simply loosened the rules around it. Change the material, introduce a new dial colour, shrink the proportions a little and suddenly an old favourite takes on a different character.

The Ref. 366001 feels very much at home in that role. It has the compact proportions that make vintage Tanks so charming, while the black and gold combination gives it enough attitude to stop it feeling overly dainty. It is easy to wear, easy to recognise and, importantly, still feels like a Cartier. There is something quite refreshing about that simplicity. No complicated case architecture or elaborate dial treatment is needed. Just a beautifully proportioned Tank, a great colour combination and a design that has managed to remain relevant for generations.

CONDITION:

8.5/10. Excellent overall condition with honest signs of wear and light oxidation visible throughout the vermeil case, consistent with age and light use. The lacquer dial remains very clean and well preserved. There are also some signs of oxidation on the hands, consistent with the age of the watch.

As shown in the photographs, the caseback retains sharp and legible engravings. The watch is fitted with a correct Cartier-style vermeil tang buckle.

The Cartier quartz Cal. 66 movement is running well and keeping good time.
