WHY WE CURATED IT:
The Vendôme is one of Cartier’s more overlooked designs. When we think of the Maison, the mind naturally goes to its more recognisable shapes: the Tank, Santos, Tortue and Tonneau. The Vendôme takes a different approach, using a simple round case that feels almost deliberately restrained.

Introduced in the 1970s and named after Cartier’s boutique on Place Vendôme in Paris, the design is a nice reminder that Cartier does not always need an elaborate case shape to make a watch feel unmistakably Cartier. Here, the case is clean and compact, leaving the dial to do most of the talking, and this particular example has a lot to say.

It is a small watch, but remarkably photogenic. There is something about the proportions that just works. On the wrist, it has a delicate presence, while the dial feels surprisingly substantial, helped by the way Cartier has layered its details.

The Roman numerals and blue hands are a particularly nice combination. The numerals give the dial its traditional Cartier character, while the blue épée hands add a little colour and contrast. Running around the centre is a fine gold inlay, creating a circular boundary between the hour track and the central portion of the dial. It is a subtle detail, but one that gives the dial a surprising amount of depth.

Look a little closer, and you start to notice how much of the Cartier identity is packed into this otherwise simple watch. The Roman numerals, blue hands, cabochon, typography and touches of gold all work together. There is no Tank silhouette doing the heavy lifting here. It is the details that make it Cartier.

That is what I find particularly charming about the Vendôme. Take away the Tank, Santos or Tortue, and the design language is still there. It just becomes a little quieter.

For the collector, I think that is where the appeal really lies. The Vendôme will never have the immediate recognition of a Tank or Santos, but perhaps that is part of the fun. It offers a slightly different way into vintage Cartier, one that is less about chasing the obvious references and more about appreciating the design itself.

And the Ref. 590004 is a lovely example of that. It is small, elegant and easy to overlook at first, but spend a little time with it, and there is plenty to discover. Sometimes those are the watches that end up being the most rewarding.

CONDITION:

8.5/10. Excellent overall condition with minor signs of wear and light oxidation visible throughout the vermeil case and buckle, consistent with age and light use. The dial remains exceptionally clean and well preserved for its age.

The caseback retains clear and legible engravings, with some evidence of previous polishing. Despite this, the engravings remain sharp and well defined overall. The watch is fitted with a Cartier brown calf leather strap, which is in worn condition, along with a Cartier-style vermeil buckle.

A new battery has also been fitted, and the quartz movement is running strong.

It is offered alongside its accompanying paperwork.
