Longines “Calatrava” Domed Silver Sunburst Dial Ref. 7841 (circa 1960s)

WHY WE CURATED IT:
An exquisitely proportioned Longines with a warm silver sunburst domed dial, strong lugs and classic case shape. Not much is known about this model, but its design and styling is very much a product of 50s/60s design sensibilities. The aesthetic is reminiscent of rival Omegas of the era, as well as Patek Calatravas. But there’s something about the proportions of all the details here that are absolutely spot on. We love the deeply textured dial, which creates a high contrast presentation depending on angle, light and shadow. And the black inlays of the indices, which aid legibility and pop. Speaking of indices, this one sports narrower and longer indices compared to another example we had some time ago. Equipped with the well respected Cal 284, regarded by some as one of the finest Longines manual-winding calibres ever made. A beautiful, evocative and versatile timepiece that’s vying for wrist time as your solid daily vintage piece! Serviced and warrantied.

CONDITION:
8.5/10, with some shallow hairlines. Dial is clean, save for a tiny area of aging between the logo and centre pinion. Hands and indices have small spots of mild aging too. Crystal has fine microscopic marks visible only under magnification. Upper left lug is slightly splayed but maintains structural integrity with no cause for concern. Caseback engravings remain deep and clear. Original signed crown. Overall, in remarkable condition for a watch over half a century old. New aftermarket strap and buckle. Movement serviced with 6 months warranty and in excellent health, with to-spec power reserve, very strong amplitude, negligible beat error and accurate to ±5 secs/day averaged from 6 timegrapher positions.
