WHY WE CURATED IT: The Longines Présence is a watch that makes no great attempt to reinvent the dress watch. The Ref. L4.720.4 keeps things firmly traditional, pairing a compact 34mm stainless steel case with a slim 6mm profile, a clean white dial and sharply printed Roman numerals. At 3 o’clock, a simple date display completes the layout.
There is something almost reassuringly familiar about the formula. The case is slim and restrained, the dial is easy to read, and the Roman numerals give it just enough formality to establish its character. Nothing is oversized, exaggerated or particularly eager to stand out. It is simply a conventional Swiss dress watch, executed in the language Longines has used for generations.
The dial is perhaps where the Présence makes the strongest case for itself. The black Roman numerals, slender hands and framed date are clearly defined against the white dial, with plenty of space between each element. There is a certain discipline to the layout: nothing competes for attention, and nothing feels added simply for the sake of decoration. The result is a watch that looks much as you would expect a traditional dress watch to look, which is both its limitation and its appeal.
At 34mm, the Ref. L4.720.4 also belongs to a size that has become increasingly uncommon in modern watches, but was once entirely ordinary. On the wrist, that gives it a discreet presence rather than trying to make a statement. It slips easily under a cuff and, at just 6mm thick, has the sort of proportions that make a dress watch feel like a dress watch.
For the collector, the appeal here is not rarity or mechanical intrigue. It is the opportunity to own something uncomplicated and thoroughly traditional from a period when Longines was still producing watches that stayed close to the established dress watch formula. Sometimes, a watch does not need to fight for your attention. It just needs to be good at being what it was designed to be.
And that is perhaps the best way to look at the Ref. L4.720.4. It is a dress watch without the frills: compact, thin, legible and quietly formal. It does not try to turn itself into a statement piece or pretend to be something it is not. It simply does its job, and does it well. There is something rather satisfying about that kind of honesty in a watch.
CONDITION: 9.5/10. The case is in excellent overall condition, with only very minor hairlines consistent with light use. The condition suggests that the previous owner wore the watch sparingly.
The dial remains clean and well preserved, while the Cal. L263.2 quartz movement is running well and keeping good time.
