Omega Genève Silver Sunburst Dial Automatic Date Ref. 166.041 (circa 1969)

WHY WE CURATED IT:
Initially a flagship dress line in the 50s, Genèves took a backseat in the 60s as sports Omegas rose to fame. But Omega kept iterating on this refined platform, pivoting to offer affordability without compromising mechanical quality. Here’s a prime example of that shift. Featuring an honest and simplified tonneau/C-case shape but inside is the highly respected Cal. 565, one of Omega’s most robust, reliable and easily-maintained automatic movements. The gently domed, no-lume silver sunburst dial is both versatile and lovely to behold in its purity. The hands and indices house black inlays to enhance legibility. And in this version, the original Omega-signed Hesalite crystal has a seldom-seen underside “eyeglass” magnifier to aid in the view of the date window. While the majority of examples do not have this magnifier, they do show up occasionally and it’s unclear if these were special orders by customers who needed them, or if these were original service crystals. A well-proportioned, versatile, legible, reliable daily/dress watch. Even better value today than originally intentioned. Serviced and warrantied.

CONDITION:
8.5/10, with some shallow hairlines and micro-nicks, overall remarkable for a watch over half a century old. Dial is pristine with only the slightest aging on the indices and hands. Original Omega-signed Hesalite crystal has some microscopic marks/scuffs, but mostly along the edges and present no impediment to the view of the dial. Original signed crown. New aftermarket strap and buckle. Movement serviced with 6 months warranty and in excellent health, with near-spec power reserve, high amplitude, low beat error and accurate to ±5 secs/day averaged from 6 timegrapher positions.
