WHY WE CURATED IT:
There are watches that announce themselves through complication, precious materials or elaborate decoration. Then there are watches that make an impression simply through the way they are shaped. The Tiffany & Co. Mark Coupe belongs firmly to the latter category.

Part of Tiffany & Co.’s more adventurous pursuit in modern watchmaking, the Mark Coupe is clearly indebted to the double ellipse cases Daniel Roth introduced in 1989. Its connection to Roth is particularly intriguing. Roth had a longstanding relationship with Tiffany through his work as Technical Director of Breguet, which at the time was exclusively retailed in America by Tiffany. This has led to speculation that Roth may have had a hand in the Mark Coupe, although there is no definitive evidence confirming his involvement.

Whatever the connection, the Mark Coupe takes the double ellipse language and develops it into something distinctly its own. The case combines curved surfaces, stepped construction and multiple levels of finishing, creating an architectural quality that becomes increasingly apparent as the watch is viewed from different angles.

The profile is particularly successful. Strong, prominently downturned lugs give the watch substantial presence while helping it follow the wrist, and the curved crystal and caseback improve its fit. The result is a case that feels sculptural without becoming unnecessarily elaborate.

There is a pleasing logic to the design. The different surfaces and transitions are carefully considered, with each element contributing to the overall shape rather than simply adding visual complexity. Even the smaller details reveal a deliberate approach to proportion and finishing.

On the wrist, the Mark Coupe occupies an unusual middle ground: dressy yet sporty, luxurious yet understated. Its strong case architecture gives it presence, while the restrained dial keeps that presence in check.

I think for enthusiasts, that is perhaps where the Mark Coupe becomes most interesting. Its appeal does not depend on a famous complication or an exotic movement. Much of its character comes from the object itself: the proportions, the finishing and the way the case interacts with the wrist. It is a distinctly late twentieth-century interpretation of the dress watch, drawing from one of the era’s most recognisable case forms while developing enough of its own language to stand apart.
